Burnout Counselling
When Exhaustion Becomes Your Default
Burnout doesn’t happen overnight. It builds slowly — through months or years of overextending yourself at work, in caregiving, or in relationships — until exhaustion becomes your default state. If you’re feeling constantly drained, disconnected from things you used to enjoy, or like you’re just going through the motions, you may be experiencing burnout.
At Vista Counselling, we work with individuals across Langley, Walnut Grove, Willoughby, and the surrounding Lower Mainland who are struggling with burnout from work, caregiving, parenting, or simply the accumulated weight of life’s demands.
What Burnout Feels Like
Burnout shows up differently for everyone, but common signs include:
• Persistent fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
• Feeling cynical, detached, or numb toward work or people you care about
• Reduced sense of accomplishment, even when you’re working harder than ever
• Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
• Irritability, anxiety, or a short fuse with people close to you
• Physical symptoms like headaches, trouble sleeping, or a weakened immune system
If several of these sound familiar, you’re not alone — and burnout is treatable.
Our Approach to Burnout Recovery
We don’t believe in quick fixes or generic advice like “just take a vacation.” Burnout often points to deeper patterns — unsustainable expectations, difficulty setting boundaries, or unresolved stress that’s been pushed aside for too long.
In our work together, we’ll help you:
• Identify the specific sources and patterns driving your burnout
• Rebuild a sustainable relationship with work, rest, and responsibility
• Develop boundaries that actually hold, even with people or jobs that resist them
• Reconnect with a sense of meaning and energy in your life
We draw on evidence-based approaches, including cognitive behavioural strategies, mindfulness-based techniques, and where appropriate, EMDR for burnout connected to past trauma or chronic stress.
FAQs
How do I know if it’s burnout or depression?
Burnout and depression can look similar and sometimes overlap, but burnout is typically tied to a specific source of chronic stress (often work or caregiving) and tends to improve when that source changes or is addressed. Depression is often broader and can occur without an identifiable external cause. A counsellor can help you understand which — or both — you may be experiencing.
How long does burnout counselling take?
This varies by person, but many clients begin noticing meaningful shifts within 6-10 sessions. Recovery from burnout is rarely instant since it often involves changing long-standing patterns, but most people feel real relief early in the process.
Do you offer burnout counselling online?
Yes. We offer secure online counselling for clients across British Columbia who prefer virtual sessions or live outside the Langley area.
Does extended health coverage and EAP plans apply?
Many extended health plans and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) cover registered clinical counselling. Check with your provider for your specific coverage, and feel free to ask us if you have questions about receipts for reimbursement.
